Woodcarving

Important souvenirs were and still are woodcarvings of animals, farmers, cuckoo clocks and other decorative items. It was made in Brienz, Frutigen and Thune and an estimate in 1873 counts approximately 2000 carvers in the Bernese Oberland. For most of them it was a side job besides farming on cold winter days. The carvers did not have sales organisations, so souvenir dealers from Thune and Interlaken purchased carvings and sold them besides paintings and pottery.
